Homeward Bound Antarctica

The second expedition of Homeward Bound Antarctica, a ten year international womens leadership program, saw the largest ever gathering of women in STEMM at the culmination of the second cohort, in Antarctica. Dreamt up and developed by Fabian Dattner, HB2 was led by Homeward Bound leadership, partnering with Greg Mortimer OAM as the ships expedition head.

Capture the Homeward Bound participant experience in Antarctica, and provide content for daily media obligations from the ship. In homage of Frank Hurleys sublime coverage of Ernest Shackletons Antarctic expedition, much of the commission was captured on (and sponsored by) Kodak film, and supported by Atkins Pro Lab. About Homeward Bound Projects

The Homeward Bound (HB2) expedition, which took place from February 18 to March 17, 2018, brought together 77 women scientists from various fields to travel to Antarctica. These women, selected for their potential to influence decision-making in environmental and scientific areas, began their journey with over a year of training that started in April 2017. The training focused on leadership, sustainability, and communication strategies. The HB2 cohort aimed to enhance their scientific skills while also empowering them to lead in global environmental discussions.

The trip to Antarctica allowed them to learn about climate change and the environmental challenges the world faces. Since the expedition, the women have continued to work together, forming a global network of female leaders focused on sustainable practices. The HB2 cohort highlights the importance of increasing women’s representation in science and leadership roles, with a focus on addressing climate change and sustainability.

This initiative has encouraged more women to take on leadership roles and contribute to finding solutions for global environmental issues. The Homeward Bound program is helping to shape the future of leadership in science.
